Who Started Journey Church?
Journey Church was started by a small group of people who
wanted to create a Christian community that would authentically welcome people
on the journey of faith from any starting point.
When
Was Journey Church Established?
In August
of 2000, a group of about 20 people known as the Launch Team began to meet
weekly to discuss the best way to make the church be relevant, experiential,
participatory, and inviting to anyone regardless of their faith background. In
those meetings we learned how much Jesus Christ has touched each person's life.
Our desire is, and will be, to invite people onto the JOURNEY of becoming fully
devoted followers of Christ. Our first public service was January 7, 2001.
Our founding pastor was Ken Macken. Pastor Ken stayed with us until December
2002 at which time he felt the Lord leading him in another direction.
Phase Two
Dr. Darrell
Yeager became our second pastor in May 2003. Under his leadership Journey
Church continued to expand and many joined the family of Christ. A second
service was added, improvements were made to the sanctuary, and the elder board
was expanded. Dr. Yeager accepted a position in Florida as a staff minister.
And Then!
On
July 3rd, 2005 Jeff and Stephani Allred stepped in as the new pastor's of Journey
Church. At this point the church had an average attendance of 160. By January 2007 the church had doubled to over 300 and launched a third
service. As of July 2009, there are over 650 active people attending
one of our 3 weekend worship experiences.
Building
for Life!In September of 2006, we officially
purchased our existing building. But realized that even with 3 Sunday
services we were still running out of room. In 2008 we purchased 20
acres of land and began designing a new muliti-phase campus that will
include a 750 seat worship center and an early learning center for
the Christian education of children ages 1 year old through fifth
grade.
Pursuing the Vision!
With an every increasing Building For Life account as a result of the generosity and faithfulness of Journey members we are closer than ever to breaking ground on the future of the ministries of Journey Church. Yet as we wait for God's appointed time to allow us access to new facilities both for children and adults, we continue to press hard into the call of Christ and the vision in which God has given us. We will not relent, we will not grow tired, we will continue to "pursue the vision" with all we have to see our city to come to the family of Christ. Through our Sunday services, community service projects, to our members simply shining the the light of Christ in their own environments, we will share the Gospel of Christ to the edges of Sequoyah County and to the furthest reaches of the earth.
